I realized after class that some of you may find my honesty a little harsh. I don't sugar coat things because sugar coating reality will not help you succeed in college. And I do care and hope that each of you succeeds in college. I do, in fact, care if you do your work. And I do actually enjoy reading your blog posts and doing so does not feel like work at all because I enjoy reading about your experiences, feelings, and ideas and what you are learning in the class. However, I feel that some of you need a wakeup call. It's not enough that I care about your success in the course. You have to care about it too. I understand that the transition to college is a difficult one, especially if your high school did not adequately prepare you. But the sooner you understand and accept the challenges of being a college student, the sooner you can begin enjoying all of the awesome things about being one, as well (like actually learning something instead of just memorizing stuff temporarily for a test).
With that in mind, I want everyone to get your webpages and blogs published (if you haven't already done so) and start participating in the blog discussions of the concepts being covered in class and in the homework assignments so that you can be active learners and contributors to the learning of others.
And don't forget that your Informative Speech topic is due on Wednesday. Just write it down on a piece of paper; I'll take them up at the start of class. Read the instructions for the Informative Speech carefully. Topics that do not conform to the assignment will not be approved and you MUST have an approved topic before you can give your Informative Speech. I will not accept email submissions of topics unless you have an excused absence.
